Schagen is known for its West Frisian Folklore. During the summer months, on ten consecutive Thursdays, a procession of historic vehicles and Schagen people dressed in original West Frisian costumes passes through the center. Walking or sitting on or in farm wagons. Each West Frisian Thursday has a specific theme and daily program, from dance, music and traditional costumes to ring stabbing.
Since 1953 the Foundation for the Promotion of West Frisian Folklore has been organizing the 10 West Frisian Thursdays. These Thursdays are devoted to living, working and dressing in the year 1910. The market starts at 8:30 a.m. and often lasts until 4 p.m. in the summer. The market is well known in the region and always pleasant. The nicest market stalls with typical West Frisian products are lined up on one side of the street. You can find the market on the Gedempte Gracht and Nieuwstraat.
