Lock Schagen

In Schagen around 1440 the first lord of Schagen had an already existing stone house rebuilt into a square moated castle, Slot Schagen. At that time Slot Schagen was intended as a residence, today this unique location can be booked for a stylish overnight stay with a delicious breakfast served at the table.

Schagensituated on the western side of the Omringdijk, has long played a central role in the surrounding area. Already in the Middle Ages the town developed into a flourishing trading center, where merchants and craftsmen earned their living.
In 1415 the independence of Schagen was anchored in city rights.

On June 29, 1427, Schagen and the Schagercogge were given on loan by the Count of Holland to William, the bastard of Holland. His descendants took the name Van Beijeren of Schagen from then on. The seigniory of Schagen and the Schagercogge existed until the French era.

Around 1440 the first lord of Schagen had an already existing stone house rebuilt into a square moated castle, Slot Schagen.
This castle remained in the Van Beijeren family from Schagen until 1658. The manor with all its appurtenances is then sold due to lack of money toGeorge van Cats, a nobleman originally from Zeeland. He had the castle adapted to the requirements of the time: the gate tower and front wall of the castle were demolished and the drawbridge was replaced by a fixed bridge. In 1676, however, the whole is already bought back by Floris Carel Van Beijeren of Schagen. However, he lives in a castle in Belgium. The castle of Schagen stands empty for a few centuries and deteriorates into a ruin.

On the cusp of the 21st century, the plan to rebuild the Castle on the original "Castle Island" is taking shape. Not as a replica of the original castle, but as a new castle building in the style matching the remaining castle towers. Monumentenzorg and the Archaeology Department of the Province of North Holland were also closely involved in the plans.
